Nonverbal Clients
The term “non-verbal” is often misunderstood within the Down syndrome community. While it implies “no language,” this couldn’t be further from the truth about our children. In reality, our kids possess a wealth of language—they just struggle to express it reliably. When we refer to someone as non-verbal, we actually mean non-speaking. Many of Darcy’s clients either have very limited speech or none at all.
SPELLERS offers a valuable and effective option for those who do not have speech. By focusing on motor skills and communication through spelling, SPELLERS empowers individuals to convey their thoughts, feelings and needs in a meaningful way. This approach recognizes and utilizes the language capabilities that exist within every individual and provide a pathway to robust communication regardless of their spoken language abilities.
